Wayne Thiebaud used food-inspired art, such as Pie Counter, as a medium for exploring composition, color, light, and texture. By physically treating his paint to mimic how bakers would apply frosting or spread frosting whipped cream onto cakes, he created a piece of pie that is both figurative and abstract.

Italian Beef

Italian beef is one of Chicago’s beloved culinary traditions, and an Italian beef sandwich is one of the three essential pieces. Homemade Italian beef requires a chuck roast, some giardiniera, and either a slow cooker or oven. First, you’ll need to season it with garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper before baking it. Once it has finished roasting, you must strain and re-add any juices before reducing to simmer mode, cooling it, and using either a mandolin or knife to slice thin slices from it for serving.
