Chris Chelios

Chris Chelios is one of the most significant veterans in NHL history, winning two Stanley Cups and three Norris Trophies during his 26-year NHL career. After being chosen in the second round at the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by Montreal Canadiens as their second pick, Chelios went on to spend seven seasons there before also playing nine years each for Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, playing an incredible total of 1,651 games during that span.
Chelios was instrumental in leading Wisconsin to multiple NCAA Division I championships during college. He credits legendary Badgers coach Bob Johnson with teaching him how to become an outstanding defensive player. Following graduation, he joined Montreal Canadiens, where he won his inaugural Stanley Cup championship in 1985.
Chelios was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990, winning his second Stanley Cup that year. His final season came with Detroit Red Wings in 2009 before retiring as a player. Chelios is known for his hard-hitting style and short temper; however, these traits have subsided since his playing days as he now works as an analyst on ESPN’s NHL broadcasts.
Chelios was among the early notables to be cut as part of an expected round of on-air layoffs at ESPN, joining former NHLers such as Mark Messier, P.K. Subban, and Ray Ferraro in being let go. These cuts come as part of Disney’s restructuring plan to reduce costs while eliminating jobs.
Glenn Hall
Glenn Hall was recently honored as one of the 100 NHL Players of All Time and is known for having been an essential goalie with both Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks throughout his adult life, starting as a goalie on both teams for over two decades. Hall is widely considered to have pioneered butterfly-style goaltending techniques.
Hall was an integral member of the franchise’s 1961 Stanley Cup championship team and participated in many playoff games for both clubs. His most remarkable accomplishment, however, was starting and finishing 502 regular season games between 1955-56 and 1962-63 without wearing any mask – an NHL record!
Hall’s career spanned 18 seasons, during which he won three Vezina Trophies for goalies with the lowest goals-against average. Additionally, Hall was named a three-time All-Star and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff most valuable player, even though Montreal Canadiens defeated him in the final.
Hall has continued his goalie coaching roles with both the Blues and Calgary Flames since retiring, as well as playing pickup hockey–Canadians call it “shiny”) on local ponds while moving through youth and amateur leagues. Furthermore, in 2005 his hometown of Humboldt honored his career by creating a monument commemorating it.
Hall married nurse Pauline Patrick in his thirties and settled on a rural acreage farm as a refuge from goaltending’s often-harsh world. To this day, he still owns and lives on this property where he spends his spare time tinkering with automobiles and tending his vegetable garden – his late wife Pauline died in June 2009 and is interred there as part of their family’s legacy.
Phil Esposito
Phil Esposito is widely considered one of the most significant centers in NHL history. As a member of the Boston Bruins, he won multiple scoring titles during his playing days and became one of the first players ever to score 100 points in a season. Following retirement, he became an executive, helping expand the league into Sun Belt regions by being the force behind Tampa Bay Lightning franchise expansion.
Esposito was an iconic presence during his later years as an announcer for the Lightning. We recently visited him at Amalie Stadium when Brayden Point scored his 50th goal of the season, where his steady voice resonated throughout the arena – we asked how it felt, knowing that without his assistance, they wouldn’t exist as we asked a few pertinent questions about Esposito’s legacy and future role with Tampa Bay Lightning.

Mike Keenan is among the most acclaimed NHL coaches ever, earning an esteemed reputation with his demanding coaching style and aggressive demeanor. He led multiple teams into the playoffs – such as New York Rangers and St Louis Blues – before winning both Stanley Cups twice while holding onto his record regular season win total of 80 wins for an unprecedented 25-year span in NHL history.
Numerous public disputes with team stars have marked Keenan’s career. For instance, when benching Dale Hawerchuk to honor her late grandmother — angering Hull in particular and prompting his threat of leaving the NHL altogether –, Keenan was ultimately removed as general manager for the Blues.
Though they boast an outstanding roster, the Blackhawks needed an elite center to anchor its offense and help young Jeremy Roenick reach his full potential as an NHLer. Therefore, they traded Denis Savard to Montreal in exchange for Chris Chelios.
The Blackhawks received plenty of value in return for trading Savard, including forward Corey Crawford and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and an additional second-round pick – but would have preferred keeping him.
Before retiring from coaching the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins, Keenan had also served as Team Canada’s gold-medal winner at the 1987 and 1991 World Championships, ranking fifth all-time for NHL playoff wins with 96 victories overall. Keenan became an accomplished broadcaster before coaching Kunlun Red Star of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, under which his success earned him the nickname ‘Iron Mike”. Additionally, he has won Magnitogorsk Metallurg’s three Gagarin Cup wins three times!
