The Best Supermarkets in Milwaukee

11

Milwaukee grocery stores offer a wide selection of fresh produce, meats, milk, and bread. Many even provide curbside pickup or home delivery service for added convenience.

Pick ‘n Save has maintained its dominance, but other big-box chains are making inroads into southeastern Wisconsin. Wal-Mart, Aldi, and Woodman’s have also seen growth.

1. Roundy’s

Roundy’s Supermarkets is a leading grocery chain in the Midwest. It owns and operates business offices, distribution centers, and 158 stores under the Pick ‘n Save, Rainbow, Copps, Metro Market, and Mariano’s Fresh Market banners in Wisconsin and Illinois.

The company’s headquarters are in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while its primary distribution center is in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

Established in 1872, Roundy’s is deeply committed to fighting hunger and eliminating waste within their communities. Their values and Purpose guide their work: Feed the Human SpiritTM.

The company is renowned for its eco-friendly initiatives and corporate philanthropy. Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, it employs 2.2 million people worldwide.

The company’s announcement that a store in Milwaukee’s Timmerman Plaza will close by March 10 is disappointing news for those who rely on it. Local aldermen are concerned about the repercussions, with other stores likely following suit.

3. Piggly Wiggly

Piggly Wiggly is America’s original self-service grocery store. Established in 1916 by Clarence Saunders, Piggly Wiggly now has more than 500 locations across 18 states, serving customers of all backgrounds.

He’s proud of being part of an organization that recognizes team members for their successes and has achieved local and national recognition. While Aldi and Wal-Mart may compete with traditional grocery stores, Pat firmly believes there’s room for both types of stores in every marketplace.

4. Aldi

Aldi Supermarket, a discount grocery store, is an ideal destination to shop for food at great prices. It boasts friendly staff and clean floors to boot!

They offer an impressive selection of foods that cannot be found elsewhere. Furthermore, their organic section is imposing.

ALDI is investing millions of dollars in renovating many of its stores, brightening them, and adding new sections. They’re raising ceilings, installing more natural lighting, and refocusing their aisles on fresh products.

ALDI offers a vast selection of groceries, from produce and meats to organic foods. Plus, they have limited-time ALDI Finds added to their weekly shelves.

5. Woodman’s

Woodman’s Supermarket, one of the nation’s largest grocery chains, has a presence in southeastern Wisconsin, with stores opening up in Kenosha, Oak Creek, and Menomonee Falls over the past decade. A new Waukesha location is set to open next year at Highway 164 and Main Street.

Woodman’s is unique among other chains because it does not accept credit cards. Instead, customers have a range of payment options, including cash, check, Discover card, and PIN-based debit cards.

These stores resemble large warehouses, featuring about 25 aisles and dedicated sections for produce and bakery items, liquor stores, and gas stations. Furthermore, they provide customers with maps.
